The place is notable as an early site in the business and commercial development of the
town of Woodanilling.
The site is on the west side of the railway and on the north of Robinson Road. Here was
built the first house in the Woodanilling townsite for the railway ganger. The building
has long since been demolished and in recent years much of the area has been built up as
part of the CBH extension.
The first bakery was situated in Stevens' old wattle and daub house. The Simpson's
along with son Lacy and daughter Violet arrived in their horse and cart at Woodanilling
and moved into Stevens' old house. They built an oven and started baking. Lucy Wilcox
remembers how she gave them some yeast to start their yeast working.
Later the family had a bakehouse out on the Wagin Road in what is known as the
'Billabong Paddock'. They were here until April 1916 when Mrs Simpson held a
clearing sale at her residence.
Despite many of the settlers baking their own bread, they appeared to do a fairly lively
trade.
