Statement of Significance

House, 14 Grey Street, is a typical rendered masonry and tile single storey house dating from c1890s. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture.

Physical Description

14 Grey Street is a single storey, rendered masonry and tile house with a symmetrical facade designed as an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture. The walls are rendered masonry. The roof is hipped and clad with tiles. The facade has a central front door with fanlight flanked either side by double hung sash windows. The verandah has a broken back tiled roof and is supported by moulded plaster columns.. There is a low level rendered brick wall to the front boundary line.

History

House, 14 Grey Street was formerly 24 Grey Street; renumbering occurred in 1935/36.
This house is evident in the Post Office Directories for 1893/94 and was occupied by John McKay. John McKay was still the occupant of the place in 1915.
The 1908 sewerage plan of the site shows this stone house has a verandah across the front and rear of the house. The two ends of the rear verandah have been enclosed with timber and one end forms the bathroom. Adjacent to the bathroom is a water tank. In the back yard is a closet. Across the majority of the front boundary is a stone wall which finishes before the eastern boundary to enable vehicle and pedestrian traffic. The house is positioned on the western boundary of the lot.
Information in 2004 indicates that the house was used as a boarding house at that time and managed by Homeswest. It was restored internally and externally at this time.
