This type of dam made possible the moving of stock around the district. It was an important aspect of the grazing industry. The holding yards next to the dam were used to hold stock when they were being moved from one location to another. Farmers bringing stock to sales from long distances would travel to holding paddocks, stay overnight, then continue on into town the following day. This enabled the stock to arrive at the sales in reasonable condition. Other examples of holding paddocks can be seen in the district at Kenny's Tank, 12 Mile Dam, Washpool and Gordon River.
The dam and holding yards are in a bush setting. A water pipe and a cement trough, surrounded by bush timber rails, can still be seen. The dam is one of three dams constructed in approx. 1928 for watering stock moving around the district. The water was carted from the dam by bucket, then poured into the top of the pipe which led to the trough.
