The Coorow dam sites have local historic significance given their association with the development of the Midland Railway and subsequently the provision of a town water supply.
The first dam was built in 1894 to provide water for Midland Railway steam locomotives and was situated at the east end of the present railway yard, the Midlands Road adjoining the eastern boundary of the dam. The second dam was built in 1945 to augment the original supply and was situated close to the south end of K. barker's shed, the catchment area being south of the present council depot. The third or 'Government Dam' was situated close to Farley street and the second fairway of the golf course, this water was used for general purposes. (Source H. Botha).
