Single storey single faced house with stone with brick quoining to window and door openings walls and a hipped and gabled roof which is clad with corrugated iron. The dropped verandah is supported by timber posts. The timber panelled front entrance door and the pair of timber double hung sash windows are extant. There is a fibro enclosed room on the east side which is not original. Nos 18, 20 & 26 are similar in design and materials.
Fremantle Rate Book records show that Lot 7 of 991 was a vacant lot in 1902/3. The owner was Benjamin Dukes. By 1904/05 he is listed as the owner, occupier of a cottage on the lot which gives an accurate date of construction. Dukes also owned Lot 8 of 991 (now number 18) in 1909/10. He lived at No. 20 until c1915. Occupancy changed often after that (at least every five years) up to 1950, suggesting the place was a rental property for that period.
The house was allocated No. 35 in 1905, and became number 20 when the whole street was renumbered in 1937.
Nos 18, 20 & 26 are similar in design and materials and were built by the same builder (information provided by owner of No. 18, February 2003).
A 1913 plan (PWD 13017) and the 1914 Sewerage Plan (No 2033) show that the house is made of stone, with a verandah that extends the full length of the front and wraps half way around the west side. A set of off-centre steps lead up to the front verandah. There is a rear verandah, and a galvanised iron shed near the house. A retaining wall divides the yard, beyond which is a large fenced off area and a small iron shed on the rear boundary.
