DEMOLISHED
House, 38 Winton Street was relocated from the failed Group Settlement at Wonnerup and was one of the first houses in the Carey Park area before of the estate was deveolped by the government in the 1950s.
DEMOLISHED
House, 38 Winton Street was built as part of the Group Settlement Scheme c 1930 at Wonnerup. After the scheme failed, the house was relocated to Bunbury by E J Hastie. Mr Hastie recalled that it cost about £40 and at the time, the land around the house comprised about 5 acres and the Hastie family had few neighbours and services until the development of Carey Park in the post-world War II period.
The Wonnerup Group Settlement Scheme was one of a number developed in the 1920s and 1930s to expand settlement and agricultural development throughout the South West of the state.
Winton Street was named for Charles Winton Higgins, a prominent citizen of Bunbury. Charles Higgins was a Bunbury councillor from 1926 to 1935 and again from 1937 to 1940, as well as a founding member of the St John Ambulance in Bunbury (1943-1947).
The house has been demolished.
