Statement of Significance

House, 81 Hampton Road, is a typical limestone, brick and iron single storey house dating from c 1896. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture.

Physical Description

81 Hampton Road is a single storey, limestone, brick and iron house with a symmetrical facade built in 1896 and designed as an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture. The walls are limestone with red brick quoins. The roof is hipped and clad with corrugated iron. The verandah has a separate corrugated iron roof supported on timber posts. There is a red face brick corbelled chimney evident. There is a high limestone and timber picket wall to the front boundary line together with proliferate foliage making further description difficult.

History

Hampton Road was originally called Prison Road. It derives its name from John Stephen Hampton (1810-1869), the Governor of WA from 1862-68. He was previously Comptroller of Convicts in Tasmania. His son, G. E. Hampton, was Acting Comptroller-General of the Fremantle Convict Establishment.
House, 81 Hampton Road was built in 1896. At this time, the three roomed cottage was owned by Miss S Murray and was occupied by Albert Hall. By 1901/02, William James, a gas stoker, owned and lived in the cottage.
A PWD plan dated 1913 shows a house of simple rectangular plan form with a full length front verandah.
By 1930/31, Albert Marvin was the owner of the property. At this time, it was addressed 117 Hampton Road.
Joseph Leggarini owned House, 81 Hampton Road from c. 1945 until at least 1981.
This place was included in the list of heritage places in the City of Fremantle identified by the Fremantle Society (1979/80) - RED -significant for contributing to the unique character of Fremantle.
