Statement of Significance

1947 - 1967 CBH constructed open bulk storage bunkers on a flat gravel surface. The sides were made of
corrugated iron supported by wooden buttresses and tarpaulins covered the grain. The grain was delivered
here by farmers and stored until it was transferred to Newdegate railhead. Prior lo this, grain had been
delivered to Hopetoun and shipped out. The first bunker was small and inadequate and filled within a week.
Farmers had to wait for this to be transferred before making more deliveries. In lime storage space increased
and then oats and barley were delivered. Australian Bureau of Statistics records 1954/55, 44,373 bushels of
wheat were produced in the Ravensthorpe Shire (average of 13.2 bushels /acre) and 1960/61 84,440 bushels
(average 15.3 bushels/acre).
