The cemetery has historic and social significance through its association with the pioneering families who settled in the area, developed its potential and contributed greatly to community growth and civic affairs.
Consideration to be given to its inclusion in the historic Serpentine townsite group of buildings.
Set amongst mature trees, with graves dating from the early days of settlement to the present day. There is also an ashes wall at the northern end of the cemetery.
The cemetery was established in 1856 to service the Serpentine districts including Keysbrook, Mardella, Hopeland and Mundijong and was originally gazetted in March 1907, although several graves date earlier than this - see below. [Government Gazette, 28/3/1907, p. 978, File 5569/06] In 1923, a cemetery board was gazetted. [Government Gazette, 24/8/1923, p. 1610].
The original cemetery had separate Catholic and Protestant sites. Serpentine
Cemetery is the final resting place of approximately six hundred and forty five people and
continues to be a public burial ground for those that contributed to the localities abutting
Serpentine and for people outside the district of all denominations.
Those buried in the cemetery include a number of representatives of the Turner, Baldwin, Tonkin, Richardson, Muller, McKay, Manning, Kite, Keirnan, Kentish, Fawcett, Cumming, Brickwood and Elliott families.
Some of the earliest graves include:
Hannah E Baldwin (d. 5/7/1899)
Mary Ann Baldwin (17.9.1908)
Mary Ann Bishop (d. 22/4/1873)
Albert Bishop (d. 14/9/1897)
Eda Busfield (d. 11/8/1892)
Minnie Hall (d. 1/4/1898)
Amelia McKay (d. 1902)
Sydney Charles Mead (d. 22/11/1912)
Elizabeth Turner (d. 20/4/1902)
