Entry into the Register of Heritage Places is official recognition, under the Heritage of Western Australia Act 1990, of the cultural heritage significance of a place. Criteria for entry in the Register is detailed in Appendix 2. Development controls apply under the Act, but conservation incentives are available to owners. Owner and public consultation, and a review process are procedures associated with Registration.

Statement of Significance

The place demonstrates a continuous function since 1912. It is
an important social and communication site. The architecture is a fine example of Beasley's era, of
which few example would demonstrate the condition and authenticity of this place.

Physical Description

Red brick construction with a corrugated iron roof. The roof features a lantern air vent with finial in the centre on the roof ridge. The frontage is balanced by three stucco detail arches, with header bricks around each arch. The residence is located at, and adjoins, the rear of the post office, and has a separate entry porch on the east side. A lean-to kitchen extension has been added to the residential section of the building.

History

Before the town of Wickepin was gazetted in 1909, EB Johnson had purchased and subdivided 10 acres of the 40 acres townsite. He subsequently constructed the hotel directly opposite the railway gates and donated the land for the Post Office. Road Board minutes of 6 January 1912 states that the new post office would be erected in the near future 25 May 1912 minutes: tenders to be called for PO. In 1918 a daily mail service to Perth was established. In 1951 the PMG asked the Wickepin manual phone exchange to convert to an automatic exchange. The Wickepin exchange went automatic in 1978. In 1980 many post offices throughout the state of Western Australia were privatised, and Wickepin's post master was withdrawn. The Thompsons took over the unofficial Post Office and continued to operate the place as. Just as the earliest settlers met at crossroads, and later at sidings or homesteads to socialise and collect their mail, the post office continued that tradition in Wickepin.
