Statement of Significance

The three residences at the corner of Jutland Parade and Wattle Avenue have significant aesthetic, historic and
rarity cultural heritage value. They are fine examples of Art Deco style in the Inter-War period. Their Art
Moderne Style originated in the 1920s and 1930s and is characterised by rectilinear and streamlined forms
with the innovative use of plastic and glass. The design style became popular in W A during the 1930s and
1940s and was enthusiastically supported in Nedlands and Dalkeith where many houses were being
constructed between the wars. The grouping of three houses of this calibre is rare and worthy of being judged
as a precinct.

Physical Description

At the corner of Jutland Parade and Wattle Avenue stand three two storey houses, all extremely fine examples
of residences built in the Inter-War period. The houses are built with many features that are typical of Art
Moderne style with nautical influences - brick with rendered horizontal elements, flowing curved valance and
parapets, expansive glassed areas, with some curved glass and steel balustrading. They are built facing the
river and are part of the area known by some as 'Millionaires Row' but more commonly as 'Bookies Row'. All
three houses have Marseilles pattern roof tiles

History

This house is thought to have been designed by W G Bennett for Mrs M Gray. Bennett was a prominent
architect of the Inter-War period. He was involved in the design of many well known public places in the City
of Nedlands such as the Peace Memorial Rose Garden, the Council Offices, the Dalkeith Tennis Club and the
Child Health Clinic near Melvista Reserve
