House, 23 King William Street, is a typical limestone, brick and iron single storey house dating from c 1899. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture.
House, 23 King William Street is a single storey, limestone, brick and iron house built c.1896 designed as an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture. The walls are limestone with red brick quoins. The roof is hipped and clad with corrugated iron. The verandah has a separate corrugated iron bullnose roof. There is a brick and iron fence to the front boundary line and excessive foliage making further description difficult.
King William Street was called Florence Street until c. 1950. The street was largely developed in the 1890s and early 1900s.
House, 23 King William Street was built between 1896 and 1900. In 1900, it was listed in rate book as a cottage occupied by the Sears family of eight. Percy Sears, a smelter, leased the house from the owner, E Vagg. By 1904/05, the cottage was owned and occupied by John Gillespie, a sanitary contractor. In the early 1920s, ownership was transferred to Isabella Gillespie, who continued to live in the house until the early 1940s.
A Metropolitan Sewerage plan dated 1954 shows a weatherboard cottage with a stone addition to the rear, with a rear verandah adjoining. There were two galvanised iron buildings to the rear on the western side of the lot, with another room/shed behind.
From the early 1950s until c. 1965, House, 23 King William Street was owned by Robert Vergona and occupied by Shirley Manucci. In 1974, the property was owned by Ante and Victorija Borcic; Robert Mackay bought it in 1980. House, 23 King William Street has had few owners since that time.
