Considerable Significance

Conservation of the place is highly desirable. Any alterations or extensions should be sympathetic to the heritage values of the place.

Statement of Significance

The building is located on Town Lot 85 which was created by the first subdivision in Guildford. The Place makes a positive contribution to the town's historic environment as a good example of Federation Arts and Crafts building.

Physical Description

A large two-storey Federation style brick and iron house built 1903. The iron roof has a front gable and brick corbelled chimneys. The interior of the house retains many original features such as use of Australian motifs on ceiling and fireplace. The house overlooks the Helena River. House is set on a large property with early plantings including rose bushes, olive trees and an orange tree. This house is built on the site of an earlier cottage dating from the 1860s.

History

The Nursing Home from 1939-79 was used as an annexe to Royal Perth Hospital. This grand federation style is typical of the early homes built by Guildford's more affluent. Owned at one stage by Mr Coombes who was a builder of many places including Musgrove's Store in Perth and Perth GPO. Home has fine fire places and plaster detailing. This property adjoins the original Helena River crossing from the eastern side of the gazetted road - Drummond Street.
