Statement of Significance

The place represents the commercial development that took place during the prosperous 1960s in Narembeen, and contributes to the character of the main street streetscape.

Physical Description

The street frontage is recessed from the boundary line and the boxed cantilever canopy extends to the boundary with a rough cast aggregate block wall supporting it on the west side. The shop front glazing is framed in aluminium, and the fascia and canopy is clad with horizontal clad custom orb.

History

The Butcher shop was originally established by Bert and Iva Walker, the parents of the champion footballer Bill Walker. In 1946 the butcher shop was taken over from Alf Brabon. In 1966 the old chemist shop was purchased and renovated and two new buildings were constructed, one of those being the butcher's shop. Before the butcher shop, Bradburys ran a grocery store on the site, and added a small room on the side of the original building to operate as the Narembeen Post Office before the Post Office opened in 1927. Later Mr Glasock was the first Chemist in Narembeen, and then Mr Burlinson, who was the Brass Band conductor in 1936, took over the store. Subsequent to that the Walkers established a butchers business on the premises.
