Statement of Significance

The place is of social significance for associations with the Methodist church in Perth in the early 1900's.
The place is of aesthetic significance as an example of a commercial building constructed during the period of economic affluence and increased development that followed the gold boom.
The place is of historic significance because it reflects the expansion and development of commerce and trade in the City of Perth in the early years of the twentieth century.
The place is a representative example of a commercial building constructed in Perth during the period of development and consolidation following the gold boom.

Physical Description

Two storey commercial building with prominent pediment and stepped parapet. Street facade modified at ground level and awning not original.

History

In 1830 the property was purchased by James Inkpen and Methodist member Barnard Clarkson arrived in the Colony. In 1836 the Subscription Chapel was built which was altered during the 1840s to accommodate more functions.
In 1897 the decision to develop the site, including the demolition of buildings, was made and construction of the Queen's Buildings began in 1898. The building was opened by the Premier John Forrest in 1899.
In 1924 a second storey was added and the building was altered during the 1950s.
