Statement of Significance

The Petit Bore has historical significance for its connection with the development of the pastoral industry in Shark Bay, having supplied water for some 65 years. The lime deposits on the bore and the surrounding pond has some aesthetic significance.

Physical Description

The central bore pipe which is set in concrete at its base is completely covered by multicoloured calcifications. From various points above and to the side of the calcifications multiple spouts of water form a fountain. The water is collected in a low circular concrete tank and spills into a pond which has rushes growing around its edge. Around the tank, a rough timber fence has been constructed. The site is surrounded by a steel fence.
Close to this site there is a fenced area which was supplied with water by overhead pipes. No evidence of the pipes was visible.

History

Point Petit Bore, has water which flows from the large artesian basin in the area. This bore is believed to have been put down in 1925-26 and is in the order of 180 to 250 metres. (Source: L. Moss.) The tapping of the artesian basin which occurred in the 1920s transformed the prospects of the Shark Bay pastoral industry. (Source: Lefroy, G.C., 'The Shark Bay Story", Vanguard Print, Perth, 1978.) It has been stated that the fenced area close to the bore was used by a Chinaman as a market garden, however this is now believed to be incorrect in that water was supplied to this area as an experimental attempt to produce stock fodder.
