Physical Description

House, 171 Marmion Street is a single storey timber house constructed in the Inter-War California Bungalow style of Architecture. The walls are timber framed and clad with painted timber boards to dado height and fibrous cement sheeting above. There are two sets of three timber framed casement windows on the front facade. The house is situated at street level. There is a low timber picket fence to the front boundary line. Vegetation in the front yard prevents further description of the front elevation.

History

In June 2001 the house was for sale with new dwellings on the same block. The original house is described as a 1940s timber framed cottage. The line drawing shows a double fronted cottage with weatherboards on the lower wall and fibro above, a protruding room on the left hand side with a gable roof with a ridge running back, a 3 paned casement window (side casements with a fixed pane) and a porch that protrudes past the line of the front wall of the left hand room, with a block of 3 casement windows on the right hand side, and 4 plain wooden verandah posts. The rear portion of the house has a gable roof with a ridge running parallel to the front wall. The plan shows 3 bedrooms on the right hand side, with a sitting room at the left front, a kitchen behind and a bathroom and laundry behind that. The advertisement indicates that the fibro has been replaced with weatherboards and the kitchen and bathroom have been 'rejuvenated'. 2 storey dwellings have been built on the block.
