House, 28 Walker Street, is a typical weatherboard and iron single storey house dating from 1940. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical workers' houses in the South Fremantle area.
Single storey weatherboard and iron cottage with an a symmetrical facade constructed in 1940. The walls are painted horizontal weatherboards. The roof hipped with no eaves and clad with corrugated iron. The verandah is under a separate bullnose corrugated iron roof and is supported by timber posts. There is no fence to the front boundary line.
House, 28 Walker Street was built c. 1950 on the site of a cottage built c. 1900. In 1900, Charles Lane was listed as the owner of the original cottage, which was occupied by William Ryan, a labourer. The Lane family continued to own the property, which they rented to a succession of tenants, until c. 1925.
Between 1935/36 and c. 1970, House 28 Walker Street was owned by Jessie and Podger. Edna Walsh was the tenant for this time and continued to live in the house after it was sold to Violet (or Viola) Croxton. Edna Walsh owned the house herself from 1974 to 1978 and the property has had a number of owners since that time.
A diagram dated 1954 shows a small asbestos cottage with a full length front verandah enclosed on both sides of the entry. A number of asbestos outbuildings in the backyard were linked with the house by paving.
High degree of integrity (original intent clear, current use compatible, high long term sustainability).
High degree of authenticity with much original fabric remaining.
