Physical Description

A complex of primarily 1940s industrial buildings situated on the north side of the Blackwood River, comprising 1940s Scrutching Room (two storey, now Hall, Office & Museum), Dormitory (including Camp Kitchen), Seed Sorting Shed (double volume), Apartment (double volume), Cottage (partially weatherboard clad), Mess Hall (partially weatherboard clad), Baling Room (weatherboard clad, now Recreation Room), Workshops (later Stables), and Retting Tanks (form concrete), all single storey timber framed and corrugated iron clad unless otherwise noted; and, 1970s brick Ablution Block, 1958 corrugated iron Storage Sheds, and recent corrugated iron and steel Open Shed. One of 3 flax mills established inWA during WWII to supply flax to Britain for the production of essential materials for the war effort, including linen thread, military boots, bandages, gaiters, canvas webbing, ropes, cords, parachute harnesses, tarpaulins and fire hose.

History

The flax industry was established in the area 1941- 1942 as a result of a need to supply the British markets for the war effort. The Boyup Brook Mill was one of a few which kept operating after the war. It continued until the 1960's.
