The place is valued by the local community as a local landmark and forms part of the Subiaco Heritage Trail.
The place is associated with Sir Joseph Duffel, the second Mayor of the then Central Ward, Perth.
The place is associated with architects Hine & Selby who were responsible for the design of many commercial buildings in Perth.
A single storey brick residence with a slate roof, an arched verandah and entry, and a front vestibule with a small distinctive tower above. The original verandah posts and timber verandah brackets are no longer extant. The internal plan of the house is unusual for this period. The dining room, a bedroom and the drawing room are entered off the hall, and the kitchen, bathroom and two bedrooms are entered off a large rear vestibule. There is also a small underground cellar accessed via a trapdoor from the pantry, and a tradesman’s entrance to the kitchen. The house still maintains original leadlights, sash windows and ornate plasterwork.
The house was originally built by Totterdell & Sons for Sir Joseph Duffel, the second Mayor of the then Central Ward, Perth. At the time of its construction, the house stood on 5 acres of dairy farm. It was designed by architect James Hine, who also designed many commercial buildings in Perth including St Andrews Presbyterian Church on St George’s Terrace, the Baptist Church on South Terrace Fremantle.
In recent times, modifications to the house have included, re-furbished bathrooms and kitchen, a pool and the addition of a double garage to the rear.
