The place is significant for the associations with transport, employment and Gordon Smillie.

Physical Description

Timber framed and clad with 'hardiflex' horizontal profile sheets. The front forms a parapet at the double gable roof. The dwelling at the rear is a timber framed and clad cottage with a gable roof and skillion break pitch verandah at front and back.

History

In the late 1920s Harold (Gordon) and Myrtle (Gordon's first wife) Smillie bought land in Forrest Rd and together with his father-in-law Mr Swinbourn, built a garage and installed two petrol bowsers. He later also built a house at the back of the properly. He had a Holden dealership and ran a garage. He was a significant employer in the town of Capel, putting many local boys through mechanical apprenticeships, later leased the business until Smillie retired in 1967 and leased the business to Terry O'Callaghan, and later sold the property and business to Rodney Spitz who has since more recently sold the place.
