Values

· the place is rare as a largely intact precinct of Art Deco style commercial and government premises.
· the fabric of the place reflects the various periods of prosperity experienced by the town of Manjimup (c.1911-1950), and other neighbouring regional centres, due to increases seen in the timber industry followed by the Group Settlement Scheme then the tobacco industry.

Physical Description

The place is a streetscape of primarily commercial premises largely constructed between World War I and II. Some more recent infill is also present constructed at various periods during the twentieth-century. Some of the c.1911-1950 buildings exhibit Art Deco styling though many have also been modified and for these places the features are not clearly discernible.

History

The Warren District was first settled in the 1850s for the purpose of farming but the district remained sparsely populated until the turn of the century. More intensive farming practices led to population increases in the early twentieth-century and the railway reached Manjimup in 1911. Industries such as timber getting then increased which led to a subsequent increase in sawmills in the area with further population increases. Manjimup was founded in 1910 and the first building in the CBD was erected in 1911, Manjimup Trading Co., which is still in business today albeit at a different location.
