HIGHLY SIGNIFICANT AT LOCAL AND POSSIBLY STATE LEVEL. Highest level of protection appropriate: warrants further assessment for possible entry into the State Register of Heritage Places. Prepare a floor plan and photographically record the place prior to any redevelopment.

Statement of Significance

The walls are of high historic, social and aesthetic significance because of the association with 'Dr'
Joseph Horrocks and his vision for the town.

Physical Description

Some of the remaining sections (as photographed) are in good - fair condition however the majority have either
disappeared, being a handy supply of building stone, or are in ruins.
Gwalla boundary walls, approximately 1 m high, constructed of random, horizontal courses of stone and set in
mud/lime (?) mortar with a jagged capping of stones on edge. The walls are badly deteriorating in places due to
later fencing work, the installation of services (eg Water Authority work), stock, removal for use as building stone
elsewhere, and the ravages of time.

History

'Dr' Joseph Lucas Horrocks wanted the Gwalla Mine settlement to resemble an English town with walled entry and
surrounds. To carry out his vision Horrocks payed the unemployed, miners and ex ticket-of-leave men to construct
a series of walls which, it is locally held, were whitewashed.
