Brookton Farmers Co-operative (fmr) is dominant in the streetscape and demonstrates historical connections of the Co-
op on the site since 1918, with new buildings in 1931 and 1942 after destruction by fire on both occasions, and
continued development of the commercial centre of Brookton. It has significant associations with the long standing
Chairman HM Eva.
The single storey brick building has an expansive shop frontage detailed in aluminium framed
shopfronts above a dado wall. timber framing with cladding above and below the shopfront windows. The parapet
fascia is a simple rectangular form with a small central oval detail on the top edge. It is clad with vertical format sheet
steel cladding. A boxed awning extends the full front width over the footpath with posts along the outside edge.
Co-operative stores were usually established in country towns and districts by the community for the benefit of the
community. In 1917, the Brookton Farmers Co-op Co Ltd opened its doors. In 1918, HM Eva was elected as
Chairman of the Brookton Farmer’s Co-operative after being instrumental in its establishment. He remained as
Chairman until his retirement in 1955. On 20 September 1931 the Co-op building, stock and records were destroyed
by fire. On 31 December 1941 a fire totally destroyed the Co-op building again. Extensive extensions and renovations
in 1966. From 1968, the Co-op was managed by Wesfarmers. In 2011 the business was sold and became IGA
Express.
