Town of Port Hedland

Statement of Significance

Although only about 50yrs old, this is one of the older houses of Port Hedland. It has good quality joinery and has been well maintained. With its wide lattice enclosed verandahs it is typical of the early timber houses of the North West towns of which few now remain in good condition.

Physical Description

The house, of timber frame supported on concrete piers, was built early in the 1930's and served as the residence for the District Medical Officer until the end of 1965. It was later used as nurses quarters and continues to serve as quarters for the hospital staff. It consisted originally of five rooms and bathroom surrounded by verandahs, with a corrugated iron roof. The back verandah has since been built in and an extension beyond the verandah contains kitchen, laundry, pantry, bathroom and toilets. On the other three sides the verandah is enclosed with lattice and partitioned for sleep outs except at the front.
