The City of Fremantle has identified this place as being of some cultural heritage significance for its contribution to the heritage of Fremantle in terms of its individual or collective aesthetic, historic, social or scientific significance, and /or its contribution to the streetscape, local area and Fremantle. Its contribution to the urban context should be maintained and enhanced.

Statement of Significance

House, 44 Jenkin Street, is a typical brick and iron single storey house dating from 1898. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical workers' houses in the South Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture.

Physical Description

Single storey brick and iron cottage with an asymmetrical facade constructed 1898. The walls are tuckpointed brick with rendered banding. The roof is hipped and gabled with short eaves and clad with corrugated iron. The half verandah is under separate corrugated iron bullnose roof with turned timber posts with decorative timber brackets and balustrade. The front facade is asymmetrical with a protruding front room with a pair of timber windows. Under the verandah is the front door and a timber framed window. There is a timber picket fence to the front boundary and a small garden area behind.

History

Jenkin Street was originally named By-the-Sea Road. It was renamed in 1909/10 for Reverend J G Jenkin of the South Fremantle Methodist Church.

House, 44 Jenkin Street was built in 1898 for Alfred Attwood, the eldest of nine children of John Edwin Attwood, an enrolled pensioner guard who arrived in Western Australia in 1865 on the Racehorse. Alman Butcher, a carpenter, was the first to live in the cottage.

In 1902/03, the cottage was owned by Alec Ahern and occupied by tenants. By 1907/08, Catherine Ahern had become the registered owner.

In 1914/15, the house was owned by Catherine Seaton and occupied by Albert Walker. A diagram dating from this time shows House, 44 Jenkin Street as a large house with brick half length front verandah and a projecting bay window on the other side. The house was weatherboard at the rear, with two weatherboard rooms flanking a small rear verandah. Another weatherboard building (relatively large – shed?) was located in the back corner of yard.

Catherine Seaton died c. 1920 and the property was held by her estate until the mid-1930s, when it passed to the estate of Kenneth Ward. It was a rental property during this time and until it was purchased by Jane Keene in 1946/47.

In 1949/50, House, 44 Jenkin Street was owned and occupied by Alma and Valentine Ward. It was subsequently owned by Nicola Marollo (late 1950s to 1988).

This place was included in the "Heritage Study South Fremantle", prepared by John Taylor Architects, for the City of Fremantle, June 1993. It was also included in the list of heritage places in the City of Fremantle identified by the Fremantle Society (1979/80) - RED -significant for contributing to the unique character of Fremantle.
