Statement of Significance

The place has associations with the social and civic activities in Wongan Hills, and as a commemorative site.

Physical Description

Cream brick construction with a low pitched colourbond metalclad roof in a square profile. The roof extends over the wall to form fascia like band around the building. The war memorial obelisk is located central in front of the community centre.

History

WAR The site was first occupied by the town dam.

In 1932 the RSL applied to the Roads Board for Town Block 126 to erect a memorial. Permission for the land was opposed, but the Roads Board contributed a £ for £ for the memorial which was subsequently constructed in front of the original Roads Board Office and hall. It was built by Roger Brown. It was later relocated to the entrance of the sports ground, and then to the existing site in the early 1960s when the Civic administration was focussed in this area. The movies are still held regularly in the Centre, run by Vic Basham.
