Statement of Significance

House, 8 Charles Street, is a typical timber and iron single storey house dating from c1898. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture.

Physical Description

8 Charles Street is a single storey timber and iron house constructed in the Victorian Georgian style of Architecture. The walls are timber framed and clad with timber weatherboards. The roof is hipped and clad with corrugated iron. The verandah is under a continuous corrugated iron roof supported by timber posts with timber balustrade. The symmetrical front façade has a central front door flanked on either side by two sets of timber framed double hung sash windows. There is a brick wall to the front boundary line.

History

Charles Street was largely developed in the last decade of the nineteenth century and much of the housing stock still dates from this time.

House, 8 Charles Street was built c. 1895. In 1895, it was occupied by Richard Donnelly, a labourer.

By 1930/31, the property was owned and occupied by Thomas Bridge. At this time, its address was 24 Charles Street.

A Metropolitan Sewerage plan dated 1954 shows House, 8 Charles Street as a large weatherboard house with a full length front verandah. The house was well set back from the street and had a centrally located path leading to the front door. There was more paving down the side and behind the house, where a detached asbestos laundry was located. A galvanised iron shed was set against the back boundary fence.

Barbara Mortimer was the owner from c. 1950 until at least the early 1980s.
