Statement of Significance

Lime Kilns, Wanneroo is a representative group of kilns covering a range of kiln types. The group demonstrates the development of lime kilns and the lifestyles of the migrant groups who built and worked the kilns. Th Dunstan's Lime Kilns are very rare as a group still capable of producing lime and are associated with the Menchetti family.

Physical Description

Lime Kilns, Wanneroo is a discontiguous precinct comprising 3 lime kiln groups ? Dunstan's Kilns (28-32; 42; 46), Yanchep Lime Company Kilns (40, 41) and East Neerabup Kilns (20 and 21) in isolated bushland settings, together with archaeological features associated with the former operation of the kilns.

History

The kilns in this group were established between 1929-1950s by Southern and Eastern European migrants who had moved to Wanneroo, the family groups building, living at and working the kilns. After the 1950s the industry moved towards industrial scale lime production.
