EXCEPTIONAL SIGNIFICANCE: Essential to the heritage of the locality.

Statement of Significance

The St Andrews Anglican Rectory has considerable historic and social significance for its association with the adjacent Church and with the Anglican community in the Mullewa district since 1927. With its stone construction and decorative detailing the Rectory Fmr is one of the more grand residences in the town. The place makes a valuable contribution to the townscape and, together with the Church, is an important social precinct.

Physical Description

Addressing Padbury Street and located immediately east of the Anglican Church, St Andrew's Anglican Rectory Fmr is of local slone construction with a corrugated iron hipped roof. The roof has gambrel vents and extends broken back to cover the front verandah which is supported on timber posts. The original timber verandah flooring has been replaced with concrete. The building features concrete block quoining to window and door surrounds, comers and two concrete block chimneys. The front (north) elevation is enhanced by a bay window and a set of French doors. There is a corrugated iron clad lean-to to the rear. The residence is set behind a tall metal pole and wire mesh fence which is an extension of the perimeter fence to the adjacent church

History

In February 1927 the Mullewa Road Board approved plans submitted by David Blackwell for a Rectory to be constructed adjacent to the St Andrew's Anglican Church, fronting Padbury Street. Blackwell was a mason who was also involved in the construction of The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (1926) and the Masonic Lodge (1926). Construction of the Rectory was financed using money raised from the sale of land bequeathed to the parish by Mr David Warren. Late in September 1927, the 'Mullewa Mail' reported that: "the new rectory is now completed and the Rector Reverend Pratt and his family are now occupying their new home. The rectory is a beautiful residence, and is easily the finest house in Mullewa: The Reverend Pratt was an active Pastor who worked hard at servicing the needs of the parishioners of Mullewa and the Murchison. In 1929, on one of his trips through the Murchison, he covered over 400 miles and visited numerous pastoral stations in the Murchison district to conduct services. In 1938, the Anglican Guild resolved that the Rectory could be let out at a low rental to a tenant of the Anglican faith.
