Statement of Significance

The place is a rare example of early Art Deco style within the central city.
The place is a rare example of historic inner-city housing.
The place is significant for its association with Catholic Church and this long-term association with architects Cavanagh and Cavanagh and represents a unique deviation from their usual style.
The place is associated with well-known local sculptor Edward Kohler is also of significance.
The place forms a significant streetscape element, especially the curved facade on the corner of Goderich Street and Hill Street.

Physical Description

Two storey corner building featuring cured wall with decorative panels. Balconies, tall chimneys with terracotta pots, windows with horizontal emphasis. Bas relief panels featuring stylised mechanical design are possibly unique in Perth. Building contained 22 flats, however, the rooms have been converted into an educational facility for the Mercedes School.

History

Building was commissioned by the Roman Catholic Church and named after a small town in Ireland. Probably the only Art Deco building designed by Cavanagh & Cavanagh. The bas relief is the work of West Australian sculptor Edward Kahler who also worked on the Piccadilly Theatre and Arcade and the Emu Brewery.
