History

Haydn’s is advertised as being located between the Crown and Victoria Hotels in 1908. AW Haydn is first listed in the Post Office Directories in 1902 and appears as AW Haydn, storekeeper from 1904 until 1909. In 1902 the Western Mail reported a fire in Mr AW Haydn’s drapery establishment adjoining the Crown Hotel.
In January 1909, a gathering of ‘prominent business men and representative citizen gathered at the Victoria Hotel…to entertain Mr AW Haydn, who is shortly leaving Collie’.
GG Iddon, store, is recorded in the Post Office Directories from 1921 until 1933. An historic photograph dated c1922 shows a group of people and vehicles at the front of ‘The Big Store: GG Iddon’. The Directories do not include street names in Collie until 1935. In 1936, W Knuckey, draper, is recorded at 65 Throssell Street. Wm Knuckey, draper is recorded in earlier years (1934-35) but not at a specific address. From 1937 until 1949 when the Post Office Directory records cease, the West End Drapery is recorded at 65 Throssell Street.
During the 1990s, ‘The Sugar Shack’ milk bar operated from the building, and later Cresswell’s Department Store. In 2016, the shop is occupied by Pak-It Computer store.
