The site is closely associated with the provision of schooling in the district.
The site of the school is a reserve on the north side of Oxley Road. The site (the Bullock
Hills Hall) is marked with a plaque. It is almost opposite Sunter Road (east of Oxley
Road). Nothing remains on the site although remnants of posts (fence) to the north and
tennis court fence posts are still evident. (Although officially in Dumbleyung Shire it is
included in this inventory as it involved many of the Shire's children)
The area around Woolkabin was originally reserved for immigrants and was not surveyed
until early 1906. The blocks were then thrown open to all comers, but the first seven to
select were all recent arrivals from England.
The new residents quickly looked at the possibility of erecting an Agriculture Hall to be
used by the Bullock Hills and Woolkabin residents for a school and for religious and
social gatherings. They met at GT Kenward's home on August 17th 1907 and elected T
Cornelius as chairman and Alex Lang as secretary of a committee to select a suitable site.
Meanwhile in May 1908 the Glencoe School to the south was opened. Over the next two
years the numbers at Glencoe school fell below the eight required to keep it open on a full
time basis. So in 1911, Martin Fox was appointed to conduct schools at Glencoe and
Woolkabin on alternate weeks.
The Woolkabin School initially had 16 children on the application represented by George
Kenward (3), Kathleen Lang (4), CH Richter (3), Cantwell (1), John Webb (3) and Rose
Fewson (2). When the school commenced on the February 21, 1910, Violet Payne was
the first teacher. Miss Payne was accommodated at the Richters.
There appeared to be some confusion with the name of the school here. This prompted
the secretary of the Bullock Hills Agricultural Hall, M Keenan, to inform the inspector
General of Schools that, "the school for which the Bullock Hills Agricultural Hall is used
is known as Woolkabin'. "
Keenan had taken over George Kenward's property and with the loss of numbers, the
Woolkabin School closed in September 1916. The stock and materials used by the school
were transferred to the Coblinine School.
