Statement of Significance

House, 11 Charles Street, is a typical limestone, brick and iron single storey house dating from c1895. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area.

Physical Description

11 Charles Street is a single storey, limestone, brick and iron house with a symmetrical facade built c.1895 and designed as an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture. The walls are limestone with red brick quoins. The roof is hipped and clad with corrugated iron. To the left of the front door is a bay window with sidelights. The verandah has a separate corrugated iron bullnose roof with portico with decorative frieze and finial supported on chamfered timber posts.. There is an iron fence butting into rendered masonry pillars to the front boundary line.

History

Charles Street was largely developed in the last decade of the nineteenth century and much of the housing stock still dates from this time.
House, 11 Charles Street was built c. 1896 for J Spencer. The house remained in Spencer family ownership (Esther then Evelyn) until the 1980s. During this time, it was continuously occupied by members of the family.
A Metropolitan Sewerage plan dated 1954 shows a brick house with a full length front verandah. The house had steps at the back door leading down to a paved area and a weatherboard addition to the south-east of the house.
This place was identified by the Fremantle Society in 1979/80 as being of cultural heritage significance. (Coded: Purple: "Of architectural and historic significance in its own right.”)
