SIGNIFICANT AS A HISTORIC SITE Historic site without built features or with association to an historic personage. Recognise the site with a plaque, place name, paving stone or appropriate marker.

Statement of Significance

The bank site has local significance historically and socially for its continuous associations with banking
in the town

Physical Description

Until late 1993 the site contained sections of an original, old weatherboard bank at the rear of a c1960's brick bank
building. Early photographs show the old weatherboard bank complete with a white picket fence. The brick sixties
building was out of character with the main street of Northampton and the new bank on the site is more in keeping
with the streetscape.

History

This was the site of the Bank of New South Wales building and manager's dwelling built by T. P. Crother in 1929.
During World War II the premises were taken over by the National Bank. The site has been used continuously for
banking and is therefore important to the history of Northampton. The current bank building was constructed in
1994.

Chronology Entries
1943 During World War II the Commonwealth Government decided that country towns would only have one
bank. Northampton had two - the National Bank and the Bank of New South Wales. A draw took place
and the National Bank won, so the Bank of New South Wales closed and their premises were taken over
by the National Bank.
