Statement of Significance

The building is important for its connection with the first European settlement of the area and for its association with pioneering families.

Physical Description

Robert and Wilhelmina Bell built a fine new house at 'Westbury' in 1915 which was indicative of their prosperity. The brick home was constructed by Buzz Miller who built many houses around Woodanilling at this time

History

In 1892 Richard and Johannah Bell's three sons, Robert, Elijah and Luke took up land about 2km south of Round Pool. This selection was named 'Muckross' after Mrs Bell's birthplace near the Killarney lakes in Ireland. It is said that Richard Bell was indentured to J.H.Monger of York and was sent to Yowangup shepherding sheep. However, when he arrived the flocks of Elijah
Quartermaine were already established there so he moved a few miles to the N.E. near Moojebing.
How long he stayed there is not clear, but he was known to be shepherding sheep in the Boyup
Brook and Hester areas in the 1860's. It was here he met Johannah McCarthy, who had arrived
from Ireland aboard the 'Burlington' in among whose passengers were the McKenna family.

Sons, Robert and Luke were to find brides around Round Pool to Wilhelmina Severin (Charlie's
sister) in 1899 and Elizabeth Haddleton (May 1902) respectively. Luke and Elizabeth's wedding brought to light reminiscences of their mothers' who had both arrived on the 'Burlington' from Ireland as young girls some 40 years before.

The brothers prospered on their property, developing it to one of the finest in the district. In 1905, Robert left the partnership, preferring to strike out on his own portion 'Westbury' to the north of 'Bellevue'. The Bell Brothers bred some excellent working horses. In early 1914, Robert Bell and his team of eight horses made an impressive sight as he delivered his wheat to the Woodanilling station. Neatly stacked on his wagon built by Charlie Becker were 121 bags of wheat. Pulling the wagon were the progency of his noted stallion 'Glasgow'. As Robert Bell had no sons, 'Westbury' was passed to his daughter, Elsie, and her husband, James Dinwoodie. Robert Bell like his brother Elijah was a long term member of the Woodanilling Roads Board. R.S. Bell served for 29 years in three periods 1911 - 1950 and was Chairman for two stints 1926 - 27 and 1934 - 1958
