Statement of Significance

Aesthetically significant as an example of Fremantle’s vernacular architecture. Typical single storey stone cottage dating from the late nineteenth to early twentieth century. Historically significant as a representation of working people’s living conditions in the Fremantle area.

Physical Description

Single storey stone and bricking quoining and zincalume hipped roof house. The dropped verandah is supported by masonry columns onto a low wall balustrade. The following places form a significant group and contribute to the streetscape South Street; 75-77, 79, 80, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86,87, 88, 90, 91, 94, 98, 102, 103, 104, 105, 106, 107, 109, 114, 140 & 142.

History

Constructed in 1889, this is a two-room cottage built for George Cooper. Cooper moved to Claremont in the early 1900s and began building pearling luggers. (Fremantle Gazette, 30 July 1980).
