Statement of Significance

Believed to have been an early wash pool for sheep which, prior to about 1910, were washed before
shearing to reduce the dirt and grease. It is one of two known structures of this type in the Williams
district, the other being upstream near the small bridge at Josbury Siding.

Physical Description

Situated on the east bank of Williams River approx 300 metres from what some believe is
"Banister's Campsite" with McDermott's Hill on the east. It consists of an elongated hole approx
3m x 0.5m with a depth of lm and lined with stone.

History

A more usual practice was to use a river pool and swim the sheep across the river to a holding yard
on the other side after being dunked thoroughly.
