The place is considered to have some significance to the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder: to be retained and conserved if possible, and the conservation of the significance of the place should also be encouraged. It is recommended that prior to any major changes, or demolition, that a photographic record be taken of the place.

Statement of Significance

The place makes a contribution to the visual character of this Burt Street with the verandah cover over the pavement and the parapet. The building contributes to the masonry 'wall' of Burt Street.

Physical Description

Although the shopfront has been replaced, the building shell is characteristic of the period: the building is built to the pavement line with a parapet, and a verandah extends across the facade and over the pavement. Reconstruction of the shopfront will increase the place's contribution to Burt Street.

History

The Insurance Plans for Boulder c. 1900 illustrate that Lot 56 had two parts. One part had a brick building, Greenwood Undertaker, with several iron outbuildings. The other part had three shops made of brick including Richard's Chemist (with an iron outbuilding attached), Krug Pawnbroker and Boulder Meat Supply. A verandah extended across the building facades and over the pavement.

General Comments: During the 1890s and particularly in the early 1900s, Boulder's population swelled by a steady influx of men seeking employment in the goldfields and somewhere to settle. This increase in population had a great influence on the town's growth. It necessitated the survey of more town and suburban lots, increased subsidies for road construction and numerous buildings were constructed.
