Statement of Significance

The Tardun Store Fmr has some historic significance as remaining built evidence of the settlement at Tardun
which serviced the surrounding district. The place has further value as a commercial premise which played an
important role for the local community from the 1920s until it closed. Although the building is in poor condition
and has been progressively added to over the years, the form of the earliest store structure can still be easily
determined.

Physical Description

Located on the eastern side of the railway and immediately fronting Railway Parade, the Fmr Tardun Store has
had multiple additions over time. The original section is a timber framed and corrugated iron clad structure
with twin gable roofs addressing the street and evidence of a separate verandah roof (now removed), partly
enclosed to the southern end. There is a lean-to roof to the south side. On the northern side is a flat roofed
addition which has walls of concrete block construction to window sill height and fibro sheeting above. There
is a low pitch awning to the frontage (western elevation).

History

Following the opening of the Wongan Hills railway to Mullewa in March 1915, the Tardun district developed
rapidly. Much of the surrounding land was settled and a hall was constructed for the local community. The
original store at Tardun is believed to have been opened in the 1920s.
