History

Hough Road was named after James Hough and his family who arrived at Australind in the ‘Parkfield’ in 1841. The Houghs farmed in the district and the family building firm built many of Bunbury’s buildings, including this residence.

House, 19 Hough Road (Lot 61) was built c 1937 for Fred Flanagan. The house was designed by architect E G Cohen and built by J G Hough and Son. The property was sold to a Miss Lucas and later to the Payne Family.

Percy Payne was Mayor of Bunbury from 1945 to 1951 and again from 1955 to 1958. He had been a local councilor since 1941. Payne has been described as a ‘rambunctious figure in local politics.’

The bungalow was largely in its original form but poor condition when it was demolished in 2001.

Eustace Cohen (born London, 1881) was articled to Thomas Lockwood and Sons at Chester before working for Guy Dawber. He emigrated to Western Australia due to ill health in 1904 and set up practice in Bunbury and Busselton (1906-1913). He moved to Perth in 1914, where he formed a partnership with Joseph Eales, trading as Eales and Cohen. Cohen was instrumental in bringing the Arts and Crafts movement to Western Australia. The earliest examples of his work in Bunbury and Busselton display his interpretation of vernacular homes in the Arts and Crafts manner.
