Statement of Significance

The place makes a valued contribution to the visual character of this important streetscape in its verandah cover over the pavement and its decorative parapet. The building contributes to the masonry 'wall' of Burt Street. The site is representative of retailing at the turn-of-the-century and is significant for its form and continuity of use.

Physical Description

: A single-storey building built to the building line of Burt Street.

The building has been altered over the years and now comprises a shopfront with a series of display windows and a display case in the centre. The shopfronts are in nickel-silver with tiled stalls below and highlights above, now covered. The former hairdressing shop is similar in style and detailing, with highlights in geometric shaped leaded and obscure glass. The central display case at the former hair and beauty shop was removed in 1997. The soffits are lined with pressed metal.

History

The Insurance Plans for Boulder c. 1900 illustrate that Lot 133 was occupied by Brennan Bros Drapers (a brick building) and two outbuildings made of iron. The building had a verandah that extended across the building facade and over the pavement.

"The family came from the gold mining areas of Queensland. Kyran Brennan opened the Boulder store and lived in the town. The brothers commenced trading in Western Australia in 1895. They opened in Burt Street in 1897" (Boulder's Hidden Secrets, 1993).

General Comments: During the 1890s and particularly in the early 1900s, Boulder's population swelled by a steady influx of men seeking employment in the goldfields and somewhere to settle. This increase in population had a great influence on the town's growth. It necessitated the survey of more town and suburban lots, increased subsidies for road construction and numerous buildings were constructed.
