Statement of Significance

Bell’s Emporium has high historic and social significance as a business which gas operated in Cue since c1904. The building has further significance for the high degree of intactness and authenticity evident in the internal fixtures and fittings. The place also has a high streetscape value.

Physical Description

On lot 11, parts 2 and 3 is Bell’s Emporium. The original store was a small rectangular building of stone and corrugated iron construction. The larger adjacent addition is timber framed and
clad with corrugated and plain galvanized iron. The shop has granite and porphyry stone walls simply whitewashed. A lantern in the corrugated iron roof and ripple iron ceilings of wagonette profile are similar to several other shops in the street. It features traditional shop front ingoes and thresholds. Both shops have verandahs supported by posts and glass windows fronts as well as recessed entrances. Many of the original internal fixtures and fittings are still intact.

History

Built around 1904 or possibly earlier, the shop was operated by Robert Bell. A larger store was built alongside in 1934 as the main ‘emporium’, which still operates today. A newspaper of the day states: “The additions to the premises of R. Bell & Co at Cue are now nearing completion and have made a striking improvement to the premises occupied by this firm for many years past. The new shop has been built to the most up-to-date plans, and in addition to departments for drapery and fancy goods, provision has been made for a pharmacy with a qualified chemist in charge.” [Murchison Times and Day Dawn Gazette, 24/11/1934, p2]
