The place demonstrates a way of life and associations with early settlers
in Hyden. It demonstrates the community spirit.
The first Hyden Tennis Club was formed on 30 April 1939,
when 30 people met and formed a committee of 8 people to organise the construction of 3 clay courts.
The courts were opened on 2 December 1939. During the 1940/41, season they joined with Holt Rock,
Kondinin and Bendering on the social tennis circuit. During the war, the club went into recess from 1942
to 1944. In 1949, professional coaching clinics were held, and many busy bees during the 1950s
resulted in the continual upgrading of the court surfaces and club facilities. In 1957, two new courts were
built, and in 1959, a pavilion was constructed, and opened in January 1960. In 1969, the club affiliated
with the WALTA. In 1977, the original club rooms were demolished to make way for 8 new courts which
were opened on 12 November 1977. The new courts prompted the idea of a new club house and
voluntary labour constructed the club rooms which were officially opened by TA Lynch, the first
President, on 15 October 1978. On 27 October 1996, extensions to the club house were opened by
Gwen Walton, a life member of long standing.
