Physical Description

The place is located on the east side of Brockman Street, close to the Northern entrance of the town. It occupies a corner site that rises to the east with its primary frontage along Brockman Street. Access to the place is from this street via steps cut through a stone retaining wall.
The building reads from the street as three primary forms – the original two storey brick and iron hotel building, a single level light weight glazed link building, and a two-storey rammed earth and timber accommodation wing that turns the Robinson Street corner.
The original hotel is a simple rectangular building with primary hipped roof form and projecting roof gables over either end of the two-storey timber balustraded verandah.
The building retains a high level of original detail both internally & externally including verandahs, staircase, pressed metal ceilings, fireplaces, doors, windows and skirtings. The front bar has recently been refurbished and the public bar dates from the 1940s.

History

The Number 2 & 3 State Timber Mills opened in Pemberton in 1912 which provided a significant source of employment and subsequently encouraged settlement of the Pemberton area. As the timber industry expanded, the 1920s ushered in a period of growth for the Pemberton and Manjimup regions. As a result of increased settlement, the Pemberton Hospital was established in 1927 and an experimental trout hatchery opened in 1930. It was also during this period that the Pemberton Hotel was constructed to meet the social and recreational needs of the people living and working in Pemberton. As was the case in most country towns, the hotel became the social focus of community life at the time and continues this function to the present day.
