Statement of Significance

Noteworthy are the architect designed elaborate house and the impressive shearing shed - both built in attractive coloured local stone - neither of which is typical of homesteads in the surrounding area.. Charles Atkins, who was responsible for
the buildings, was a well known Perth business man, at one time owner of the Palace Hotel in Perth.

Physical Description

The homestead of the original lease held by - Tyson was on another part of the run near Mt. Narryer itself. A second house, of which some ruins can still be seen near the present house, was built about 1900. When the station was acquired by Charles Atkins he decided to build on a grand scale and engaged Eales & Cohen to design the house, for which 13 acres of landscaped garden was also planned, though the garden plans were not implemented. The house which has cement quoins with black tuck point ing is of the local stone, pinkish red in colour but rather soft. It is an elaborate structure with arched verandah, exposed beams and timber panelled fireplaces in sitting room and dining room. The soft stone has fretted at ground level and in 1960 repairs, using bricks, were carried out .

The shearing shed, about a kilometre from the house, is of the same stone with heavy uttresses along the sides and across the end and was built c.1918.
