Statement of Significance

The place represents a phase of development in Narembeen and a way of life.

Physical Description

Constructed of cream coloured face brick with a gable dark grey tiled roof, the pavilion shaped building runs perpendicular to the street.

History

In about 1935 the Grain Pool first began a scheme whereby 1/8 penny per bushel was put into a reserve fund and invested. The interest from the investment benefited the farming community through t he provision of low interest loans. Originally the funds assisted the CWA branches to construct their rest rooms, however when that was no longer required, the funds were used for the aged people in the rural communities. The first example of aged peoples accommodation from this source was in Wongan Hills, and Narembeen was the second town to benefit. In about 1964 Arthur Latham was a trustee of the Grain Pool. A committee had formed in 1971 at Latham's instigation, and two units were constructed with additional assistance from the Federal Government and a two for one subsidy from the State Government. The first duplex completed in 1972, was called Cominin, and housed 3 people. The second development called Tampia, completed soon after the first, was independently funded by the prospective occupants, with a subsidy to provide for life tenancy.
