Statement of Significance
This place has historic significance as a former bank in the Old Port City of Fremantle dating from the inter-war period. The place has aesthetic significance as an unusual example of a building in the Inter War Free Classical style with monumentally proportioned columns.
Physical Description
Two story rendered building, façade has probably been largely altered. The façade has four tall Corinthian columns sided by two arched windows that form a porch area, three doorways with central main entrance and windows exit behind.
History
High Street was named by Surveyor General Roe - as was customary in English towns, the main street of the town was named High Street. Eastward from William Street the roadway was completed by convict labour after the Town Hall was built in 1887. High Street around the Town Hall closed to traffic in 1966. The High Street Mall was trialled in November 1973 and made a permanent pedestrian mall in 1975.
Prior to this building on the site was Bousfields Menswear (c1905). This building was built for the Commonwealth Bank in 1934.
Alterations were done in 1967-68 by Forbes & Fitzhardinge for ANZ Bank.
The place was taken over by the Hospital Benefit Fund in 1977.
From c 2002 to c2006 it was Indigenart - The Mossenson Gallery.
Currently (2013) it is the New Edition Bookclub and café.
