City of Subiaco

Values

· The place represents some of the earliest extant infrastructure built to accommodate the need for greater power generation for Western Australia’s growing population in the early twentieth century. · The place provides information about the types of buildings used for electricity generation networks in the early twentieth century.

Physical Description

The place is a rectangular plan red brick and corrugated iron building reminiscent of the Federation Warehouse style. The roof is hipped with louvered gables. The original transformer room occupied the southern third of the building and this section exhibits high level semi-circular arched windows to the east façade, wall vents, brick buttresses, and double timber doors. Exit and entry points for the electricity cables are still apparent, as are three high voltage insulators and a metal sign with ‘Danger 6000 Volts’ written on it.

History

Initially the suburb, which later became Subiaco, lay between the railway and King’s Park and comprised large lots of four to ten acres. However, the 1890s saw many of these lots subdivided into residential lots with further subdivisions occurring to cater to the huge increase in population following the gold rush. Considerable expansion of residential and commercial building in the areas to the north, east, and west of the city was experienced, including Subiaco, which became a municipality in 1897. By 1901, Subiaco had a population of 2055, which increased to 8926 in 1911.
