The place represents significant associations with commerce and service industries in the town of Capel since 1911. It has associations with the first baker and butcher in Capel, and has a sense of place for generations of people who went to the shop.It makes a significant contribution to the main street streetscape in Capel and the character of townscape of the town.
The shop and residence comprise one building which is located on the street front boundary of the site. A smaller building set back from the road. Timber framed with weatherboard walls and corrugated iron roof, the shop building is typical of the early development of Capel townsite. Rear extensions in timber frame with asbestos cladding.Bakery building had an English Boand face brick fire box. The building was structurally unsound and in poor condition prior to it's demolition.
Bakehouse with mud oven built 1904, and probably the first bakery on Capel. Julian Harrison first built the two roons fronting the main street, one shop and one dwelling, and added more rooms ad the family grew. In 1914/15 Mrs Eliza Harrison (nee Turner) still owned the property, and lot 174, behind lot 178, fronting Stirling Road, was owned by Julian Harrison, baker.
The shop sold bakery products which had been baked onsite, confectionary, drinks and ice creams. The bakery oven was updated. The flour was delivered by horse and cart from the railway siding, and Eliza unloaded the flour and did all the heavy lifting as her husband had a bad heart and lungs. Julian delivered the bread in a spring pulled by 'Dolly Grey', a white horse.
At some stage, (c.1902/08) a two roomed butcher shop was builkt between the bakehouse and the shop/dwelling. The butcher shop was run by Henry Turner, and may have been the first butcher shop in Capel. Later the shop was a Boot makers and McCormick's (Macs) who sold guns and radio items.
By 1934, Beatrice Pettit (husband Tod), one of the four daughters of Mr & Mrs Harrison, owned lot 178, and Mr Harrison, then a pensioner owned lot 174. By 1940, the bakery shop was run by Stephen & Phyllis Page, although by 1944, Mrs Pettit owned both lots. In 1948, Steve Page bought lot 178, and during the early 1950's, also bought lot 174. From 1973 to 1985, Donald Stephen Page owned both lots. In 1986, Roy Heine and Horace Morse, who established the Bubbling Billy Tearooms, after they purchased the property, and made some alterations. The Tearooms relocated to it's current site after William Lee purchased the property in 1989 and effected more alterations. After Mr Lee died in 1993, the property was in the hands of the Public Trustee.
In 1993, the Shire received an application to demolish the two buildings which were in the site at the time. The first bakery building in Capel has since been demolished (c.1994).
